Craig Herbertson

Craig b&wCraig Herbertson was born into one of Edinburgh’s most musical families. As the son of a jazz trumpeter, Craig came to love swing jazz at an early age. His uncle played in a skiffle band while his grandparents were well-known music hall and theatre performers.

Craig’s musical career began in earnest with the Scottish New Wave band The Androids, who were reviewed in the New Musical Express and played on BBC Radio 1 by legendary DJ John Peel.

In 1999, he came to Germany and was invited to sing in the dance spectacular Celtic Life. The show toured Germany, and Austria and ended with a final Gala performance in Edinburgh with the Scottish Pies and Drums and Chris DeBurgh. In the same year, he met the musicians of the Scottish band Scapa Flow and played with the group at festivals, highland games and other events in Scotland, England, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Some high prestige events finally culminated in a performance of ‘Hearts of Glory’, a song written in commemoration of ‘The Sporting Battalion’, at Tynecastle Park in Scotland’s capital City.

In 2004, his composition Hearts of Glory raced into the Top 20 of the BBC UK “Indie” Charts. The follow-up albums Lord of Whisky and A Health to the Ladies confirmed his reputation as a composer of traditional and contemporary songs.

In 2011, Craig achieved 2nd place at the German Rock & Pop Prize in the category Best Folk Rock Singer. His new album Communication Breakdown marks something of a departure although he remains true to his musical roots. His love of traditional Scottish and Irish songs is undiminished but jazz and rock influences are reflected more strongly.

Die Alben Lord of Whisky und A Health to the Ladies bestätigen seinen Ruf als Komponist traditioneller und zeitgenössicher Lieder.
